Window Replacement and Installation
How can I tell if a replacement window is energy efficient for cold climates?
Look for the NFRC (National Fenestration Rating Council) label on the window. For cold climates, focus on two numbers: the U-Factor and the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC). A lower U-Factor means the window is better at retaining heat, critical for cold winters. For SHGC, cold climates actually benefit from a higher rating on south-facing windows to allow passive solar heat gain, while a lower SHGC is better on other exposures to block unwanted heat. Quality construction and professional installation are equally important; even the best-rated window will underperform if it isn't installed correctly.

Door Replacement and Installation
Do you offer door replacement in Northern Virginia?
Yes. Door replacement is one of Hodges' core services throughout Northern Virginia and the broader DMV region. We offer an extensive range of door types (exterior, patio, luxury, historic, commercial, barn/carriage, French, Dutch, bifold, lift and slide, and more) in a variety of materials, including hardwoods (oak, mahogany, cherry), softwoods (pine, cedar), exotic woods (teak, walnut), fiberglass, and steel. Every project begins with an expert consultation and includes professional installation by Hodges' own in-house team; we do not use subcontractors.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting
How do I stop tiny bugs from coming in through my windows?
Bugs typically enter through gaps and cracks in window frames, worn weatherstripping, and damaged or loose-fitting screens. Start by inspecting your window frames for gaps (even micro-cracks at joints where materials meet) and seal them with silicone-based caulk. Replace any worn weatherstripping around windows and doors. Check your screens for holes, tears, or loose edges and patch or replace them as needed. If you have gaps under exterior doors, a door sweep will close that entry point as well. If you're dealing with persistent infestations or notice signs of wood-destroying insects like termites or carpenter ants, call a professional. Modern replacement windows with improved sealing technology can also provide long-term protection if your existing frames are too deteriorated to seal effectively.
